Job Description

A Specialist in Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing programs and initiatives to ensure a safe and environmentally compliant workplace. This role involves identifying and mitigating risks, promoting safety awareness, and ensuring compliance with EHS regulations and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

EHS Program Development:

Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive EHS programs in line with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

Establish policies, procedures, and guidelines to promote a safe and sustainable work environment.

Risk Assessments:

Conduct risk assessments and hazard analyses to identify potential workplace hazards.

Develop strategies and measures to mitigate risks and prevent incidents.

Regulatory Compliance:

Stay informed about local, state, and federal EHS regulations.

Ensure the organization’s compliance with applicable laws and standards.

Training and Awareness:

Develop and deliver EHS training programs for employees at all levels.

Promote a culture of safety awareness and environmental responsibility.

Incident Investigation:

Lead investigations into workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses.

Identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Emergency Response Planning:

Develop and maintain emergency response plans for various scenarios, including fire, chemical spills, and natural disasters.

Conduct drills and training exercises to ensure preparedness.

Environmental Compliance:

Oversee environmental compliance efforts, including waste management, air quality, and water management.

Implement initiatives to minimize the environmental impact of operations.

Audits and Inspections:

Conduct regular EHS audits and inspections to assess compliance and identify areas for improvement.

Collaborate with internal and external auditors.

Ergonomics and Wellness:

Address ergonomics concerns to enhance employee well-being.

Implement wellness programs to promote a healthy work environment.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

Analyze EHS performance data and generate reports for management.

Track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of EHS programs.

Stakeholder Communication:

Communicate EHS initiatives and updates to employees, management, and external stakeholders.

Foster open communication channels for reporting safety concerns.

Continuous Improvement:

Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in EHS processes.

Implement best practices and industry innovations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes:

Working knowledge and understanding of applicable laws, regulations, and other legal regulations that govern the environment, health, and safety in the workplace

Specialists in the environment, health, and safety field

Display influencing ability and good interpersonal verbal and written communication skills

Display planning, organizing, and problem-solving ability

Good attention to detail and display the ability to collaborate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders

Academic Qualifications and Certifications:

Bachelor’s degree level

Certificate in Health, Safety & Environmental Processes

Required Experience:

Demonstrated active working experience with the environment, health, and safety issues in a related industry/environment

Experience dealing with a variety of stakeholders and influencing decision-making to manage business risk

Experience dealing with legislators and governing bodies

Typically requires demonstrable related experience with a Bachelor’s or equivalent degree; or moderate level experience and a Master’s or equivalent degree; or a Ph.D. or equivalent degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.
