Fresh out of college, most people are excited to get that first job. Given that most graduates do not have work experience or only had a part-time job while studying, it is not easy to secure an executive position immediately.
Starting from scratch, one has no choice but to start at the bottom in an entry-level position, then move to the top in time. The challenge most graduates face in applying for jobs is competition. Apart from those who have just graduated, there are also those who have left their previous job and are looking for a new job.
According to hiring and compensation experts, there isn’t that much room to negotiate when there’s a new grad. This is because that person does not have enough work experience as a basis for negotiating a higher salary than those who have already worked.
The range of new graded pay is based on the course that the college has finished. For those surveyed who volunteered, it was found that those graduating from the sciences were able to earn higher salaries than those graduating from the liberal arts.
One tactic that can help a little in the negotiating process is to know your potential and not easily short or sell yourself. During an interview, it will depend on how much you are getting. Most freshman grads accept what is given immediately and answer “okay” to end it.
It is best to only talk about salary when an offer has been made. If the interviewer is nice, he can wait. During that time, one might try to ask how much the company would pay for someone in that position, then be able to negotiate that later, regardless of the figure given.
The applicant can then ask questions such as job responsibilities and mention that the contribution that can be made to the company is more important than the salary you will receive by showing the recruiter that you are a team player.
Applicants can negotiate more by researching how much other companies are offering for the same job before responding immediately. Knowing that information, it is possible for you to negotiate some more on the salary offered.
Getting a job is not just about salary. It includes other things that the company provides to its employees and by thoroughly examining other benefits and perks, it can also help in deciding whether the applicant should accept the job or not.
